Scientific inquiry
- of the natural sciences: physics, chemistry, biology
- to uncover the underlying laws of the workings of the universe at large
- methodology: theory extrapolated from empirical data attempts to explain and predict events
- judgement grounds are often explicit, based on rigorous criteria, that can be strictly adhered to
Aesthetic inquiry
- of the arts: literature, music, art, theatre
- to rediscover the intention of the creator camourflaged beneath the beauty
- methodology: inter-subjective collaboration of perspectives and evaluation
- judgement often involves a trained organ, for eg. eye for sculpture and ear for composition that can differ across cultures
Many parallels between the two, but students are trained to think differently about them from young- the arts and science faculties or streams. Think both are not mutually exclusive. One can excel in both. Things are picking up- used-to-be unpopular courses are getting hotter. Think both are equally important. One need not be an expert in the field, be critically alert or consciously aware- a faint interest to appreciate is a good start, to trigger a hobby or spur on some interaction.
